On December 5th, Lisa Finley, Jackie Sanders, Gussie Cook, Rory Scilacci, and Danielle McCauley of the Baker FFA traveled to Ontario to compete in a state-wide competition of Veterinary Science. The Baker chapter members have practiced various clinical practicums as well as handling and restraints. Eight out of the 50 practicums were put to the test this Saturday. Included in the CDE (Career Development Event), is a math section. The team must complete this part using conversions and real veterinary science problems. The writing portion of Vet Science consists of a scenario that a veterinarian might find in the workplace. The FFA member must then find a solution and write a summary of how the problem is solved within a limited amount of time. Finally, the team of five must present a team presentation in less than 15 minutes in front of several judges. The presentation topic varies every year. The topic chosen for this year was Salmonellosis. The Baker FFA has practiced the team problem prior to competition, but must be knowledgeable about the given idea of salmonellosis for any questions that may be asked by the judges. Overall, the Baker FFA Vet Science team  took home 7th place. The top two individuals were Dani McCauley at 13th and Gussie Cook at 25th out of a total 75 FFA member from across the state of Oregon. The Vet Science team went home with more experience in the field of Veterinary Science and are excited to compete in next year’s competition.

Baker FFA members polished their skills in salesmanship, customer service, and job interviewing to prepare for the District Agriculture Sales Career Development Event, also hosted by the Baker FFA on Wednesday, December 9th. Ag Sales consists of multiple sections such as customer relations, telephone, prospecting, advertising, sales presentation, and job interview. FFA members worked through the separate practicums whether it was solving a problem for a customer, ordering products over the phone, or even reaching out to a potential customer. For some, this is a familiar experience, but for the greenhand teams, this is a brand new atmosphere. The Job Interview competition was held in conjunction with the District Ag Sales event. Sixteen individuals participated in this event and competed for the top six positions which will then move on to the districts in February. Throughout the day, the Baker FFA members were able to use their knowledge of not only sales but experience in agriculture as well. At the end of the competition-filled day, the Baker chapter brought home two second place banners for both the greenhand and advanced teams.  Baker FFA members who participated were: (Job Interview) Melissa Foltz, Kourtney Lehmen, Morgan Scilacci; (Advanced Team) Jake Bobo, Ashley Brinton, Gussie Cook,Duncan Mackenzie, Lynsey Harris, Christian Oliver, Alicia Maldonado, Christina Maldonado, Delaney VanArsDall, Shaylee Villastrago; (Greenhand Team) Colton Anderson, Clay Christman, Quinn Coomer, Emma Finley, Reno Hammond, Lexie Harrell, Connor Lay, Hannah Metz, Kaden Sand, Paetyn Werner.

Together Oregon FFA and Les Schwab are #TiredofHunger

November 9, 2015

The Baker FFA Chapter of Baker City, Oregon paired up with the Les Schwab center in an effort to fight hunger in our community. The Oregon FFA and Oregon Les Schwab stores  launched a statewide hunger initiative in order to raise food to supply to the growing need in our community and state. The statewide service initiative took place during the entire month of October. The initiative is part of the FFA’s core purpose of “Living to Serve” which is part of the FFA Motto, “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live and Living to Serve.” Les Schwab Tire Centers partnered with the Oregon FFA in 2011 when state budget cuts threatened the very survival of FFA in Oregon.

The food drive is Les Schwab and Baker FFA Chapter’s way of helping fight hunger and partnering together to lend a helping hand. On October 29, the Baker chapter dressed up in costumes, trick or treating for can food items to supplement the food drive.  Thank you for participating in the food drive led by the chapter along with Les Schwab and for donating to the Trick or Treating for cans activity throughout the community. FFA is very grateful for all the donations received during October. Thank you for your support and generosity. With combined efforts, the Baker FFA raised a total of 1,760 pounds of food to help fight hunger.
Since the recession in 2008 the Oregon Food Bank has seen a 41 percent increase in the need of food box distribution. A total of 270,000 people in Oregon per month received meals from the Oregon Food Bank and 92,000 of those are children.
The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 610,245 student members – all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture. There are 7,358 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Oregon FFA has nearly 6,000 members in 100 chapters throughout the state. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
