On December 5th, Lisa Finley, Jackie Sanders, Gussie Cook, Rory Scilacci, and Danielle McCauley of the Baker FFA traveled to Ontario to compete in a state-wide competition of Veterinary Science. The Baker chapter members have practiced various clinical practicums as well as handling and restraints. Eight out of the 50 practicums were put to the test this Saturday. Included in the CDE (Career Development Event), is a math section. The team must complete this part using conversions and real veterinary science problems. The writing portion of Vet Science consists of a scenario that a veterinarian might find in the workplace. The FFA member must then find a solution and write a summary of how the problem is solved within a limited amount of time. Finally, the team of five must present a team presentation in less than 15 minutes in front of several judges. The presentation topic varies every year. The topic chosen for this year was Salmonellosis. The Baker FFA has practiced the team problem prior to competition, but must be knowledgeable about the given idea of salmonellosis for any questions that may be asked by the judges. Overall, the Baker FFA Vet Science team took home 7th place. The top two individuals were Dani McCauley at 13th and Gussie Cook at 25th out of a total 75 FFA member from across the state of Oregon. The Vet Science team went home with more experience in the field of Veterinary Science and are excited to compete in next year’s competition.
